Forest of Bowland among UK’s most underrated beauty spots
A National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – AONB) in Lancashire has been named among the best in the UK in a new list by The Times.
The Times list says:
“Much quieter than the neighbouring Yorkshire Dales, this 310 square mile area of natural beauty has rugged moorland, gritstone fells and farmland to explore (the historic moniker of “forest” can be rather misleading).
“Explore the 14th-century ruins of Whalley Abbey, or take in rousing views of the walkers’ favourite, Beacon Fell Country Park.
“Bowland is also a designated site of special scientific interest thanks to its proliferation of brown hares, bats, moths and birds, from oystercatchers to peregrine falcons.
One reviewer complimented the area’s beauty, saying: “Went for a walk with my daughter and dog and was amazed at the beauty of the forest.
Another said: “Absolutely stunning forest. We live near a well-established forest but it’s got nothing on this wonderful beauty. Lots of well sign posted walks.”
