Here at Bowland Wild Boar Park we are committed to providing a good quality service whilst minimising the environmental impact of our activities.
A symbol of this commitment is our membership of the Green Tourism Business Scheme. We are currently reapplying for our Gold Award.
The scheme provides accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities. By encouraging sustainable practices the scheme ensures the continued enjoyment of the environment around us for future generations.
We have taken and continue to take steps to put our Green Tourism Gold status into action, and reduce our impact on the environment. These include:
Sustainable Tourism Network: We are a part of a Business Network Membership for the Forest of Bowland, which allows us to support the principles of sustainable tourism in the area. More information can be found HERE where you can also find walking routes in the Forest of Bowland.
Wildlife Conservation: Some of the measures we have taken to conserve wildlife at the park include the installation of bat boxes, bird houses, and bird feeders which can be seen from the Café. Our sheep are self-shearing, so we leave the wool that they have shed on the ground for birds to take for their nests. In the Café we also have a bee observation window, which means we are actively supporting their survival and their contribution to the pollinating process.
Rewilding: Since taking over the park in 2019, we have planted 5,500 trees are in the process of planting a combination of bluebells and daffodils (around 7,000 in total).
Our Own Meat: The vast majority of the meat that is used in our Café and Burger Van is our own, either from the park or our farm in Great Eccleston. Our rare breed steaks, burgers, sausages, and joints can be bought in our shop on site, or online and through our social media. More information about our meat can be found here: www.rarebreedmeat.com
Recyclable Packaging: In our Café we have replaced single use plastics e.g., sauce and sugar sachets, and opted for recyclable and biodegradable material for our food packaging, coffee cups and cutlery. We recycle right across the park, for example we collect vegetable waste from a local supplier which is fed to some our animals.
Installation of a wind turbine and PV panels in the field which generates the majority of the parks electric power.
Installation of solar panels on the Cafe and at various other locations within the Park. The readings from our solar panels and wind turbines can be seen in our Ice Cream Parlour.
Public Transport Access: visitors can get a bus from Longridge to Chipping then travel on foot from chipping village which is about a 3.5 mile walk to the park following the brown tourist signs.
Bikes are welcome: we have a bike rack for visitors to leave their bicycles. Cyclists are more than welcome to come to the park as a rest stop and use our Café, Ice Cream Parlour and Toilets. We also have cycling maps available in the office.
Reed Bed Waste System: All our wastewater is sent down into our reed bed, where it is filtered and fed into the river Hodder. This means all our cleaning products are free from bleach and harsh chemicals, ensuring the river and the wildlife that inhabit it are protected.
Recycling bins in use around the park to encourage visitors to separate their rubbish.
